Mark 5:7
“and crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have I to do with you, Jesus, you Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, don’t torment me.””
What does Mark 5:7 mean?
A demon-possessed man encounters Jesus and immediately recognizes who he is, crying out in fear and desperation. The phrase "What have I to do with you?" was a way of saying "leave me alone," expressing the deep conflict between the demon's nature and Jesus's presence. Even in his torment, the man's plea reveals something important: the supernatural world knows Jesus's true identity and power, and evil instinctively recoils from it. What's striking is the raw honesty here. The man doesn't hide his terror or pretend to be fine; he voices his anguish directly. This can speak to anyone who feels trapped by circumstances beyond their control or who's ever wondered if God's help might somehow make things harder before they get better. Jesus's response (which follows in the next verses) shows that his power isn't meant to torment but to heal and restore. Even when we're afraid or confused about what God is doing in our lives, his presence is ultimately oriented toward our freedom, not our suffering.
