Mark 5:3
“He lived in the tombs. Nobody could bind him any more, not even with chains,”
What does Mark 5:3 mean?
This man was so tormented—by demons, by illness, by whatever wrestled inside him—that he couldn't stay near other people. He'd broken free from every attempt to restrain him, even the strongest measures available. The image is deeply lonely: living among the dead, rejecting or unable to accept help, trapped in a cycle no one could interrupt. What makes this moment powerful is that Jesus is about to arrive and change everything. The man's condition seems hopeless and permanent, but the gospel is telling us that even the most shattered person, the one everyone's given up on, isn't beyond reaching. Sometimes we need to sit with how broken things can become before we're ready to witness what healing looks like.
