“They began to beg him to depart from their region.”
What does Mark 5:17 mean?
The people of the region are asking Jesus to leave after he heals a man who had been tormented by demons. This happens right after the demons enter a herd of pigs, which rush into the sea and drown, costing the locals their livestock and livelihood. Their fear and economic loss matter more to them than witnessing something miraculous, so they want him gone. It's a sobering moment that shows how people can encounter the divine and choose comfort or familiarity instead. Sometimes we push away what challenges us, even when it comes with healing.
