What does Mark 2:28 mean?
Jesus is claiming something radical here: his authority extends even over the sacred Sabbath law that had shaped Jewish life for centuries. Just before this, he'd been criticized for letting his hungry disciples pick grain on the Sabbath, and instead of apologizing, he's asserting that he stands above the rules themselves. He's not saying the Sabbath doesn't matter, but that his compassion and purpose take precedence over rigid rule-keeping.
