“He said to them, “Did you never read what David did, when he had need, and was hungry—he, and those who were with him?”
What does Mark 2:25 mean?
Jesus is defending his disciples by pointing to King David, who also bent the religious rules when facing genuine hunger. David entered God's temple and ate the consecrated bread, something technically forbidden, because he and his companions were genuinely in need. Jesus uses this as an example that sometimes human necessity takes precedence over strict rule-following, and that even revered figures in Scripture made similar choices. He's essentially saying, "If you condemn my disciples for satisfying their hunger on the Sabbath, you'd have to condemn David too."
