“But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then will they fast in that day.”
What does Mark 2:20 mean?
Jesus is speaking about a time when his disciples won't have him physically present anymore, and he's saying that fasting (going without food as a spiritual practice) will make sense for them then. Right now, while he's with them, celebration is the right response, but after he's gone, they'll naturally turn to fasting as a way to process grief and draw closer to God. He's gently preparing them for what's coming, acknowledging that their joy will be complicated by loss. It's both a prediction and a compassionate recognition that sometimes our spiritual practices shift when our circumstances change.
