“John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, and they came and asked him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don’t fast?””
What does Mark 2:18 mean?
The religious leaders of Jesus's time practiced regular fasting as a sign of devotion and self-discipline, and they noticed that Jesus's followers weren't doing the same. Their question sounds innocent but carries an edge, suggesting that maybe Jesus and his disciples weren't serious about their faith. What they really couldn't see was that Jesus's presence fundamentally changed what spiritual devotion looked like, not because rules didn't matter, but because the focus had shifted from outward performance to genuine relationship. Jesus's answer (in the verses that follow) reveals that mourning and celebration have their proper seasons, and you can't impose one when the other is what's actually happening in people's hearts.
