Mark 2:17
“When Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.””
What does Mark 2:17 mean?
Jesus is responding to religious critics who were upset that he ate dinner with tax collectors and other people considered "unclean" or morally compromised. He uses the simple image of a doctor to explain his purpose: a physician goes to those who are ill, not to those who are well. Similarly, Jesus came specifically for people who recognize they need help, who know something is broken in their lives. The tricky part is the phrase about "the righteous." Jesus isn't saying some people actually are righteous and don't need him. He's gently challenging the assumption that anyone can be so good they don't need transformation. He came for people willing to admit they're stuck, struggling, or lost, because that honesty opens the door to real change. If you're carrying shame about your past or feeling like you're too far gone, this verse is Jesus saying directly: you're exactly who I came for.
