What does Mark 16:11 mean?
The disciples had just heard from Mary Magdalene that Jesus had risen from the dead. Instead of celebrating, they refused to believe her, even though she claimed to have seen him with her own eyes. This moment captures something very human about grief and shock: when something contradicts what we're certain about, our first response is often doubt rather than hope, even when we desperately want to hope. It's worth noting that Mary Magdalene wasn't a particularly powerful or prestigious witness in that cultural context, which may have made the disciples even more skeptical. But what makes this passage tender is that their disbelief didn't stop Jesus from appearing to them anyway. Their doubt didn't disqualify them from encountering the risen Christ.
