What does Mark 15:2 mean?
When the Roman governor Pilate interrogates Jesus, he's trying to establish whether Jesus has made claims that would constitute a political threat to Rome. Jesus's response, "So you say," is deliberately enigmatic—it neither confirms nor denies the charge outright, leaving the interpretation in Pilate's hands. This evasiveness was a common rhetorical move in Jewish tradition when faced with a question designed as a trap. What makes this exchange poignant is that Jesus knows what's really true about his kingship (it's spiritual, not political), yet he won't compromise or defend himself with explanations Pilate wouldn't understand anyway. Instead of arguing his case, Jesus essentially returns the judgment to Pilate himself. In a moment when everyone around him is deciding who Jesus is, he leaves that decision with them, a quiet refusal to play the game by their rules.
