Mark 14:71
“But he began to curse, and to swear, “I don’t know this man of whom you speak!””
What does Mark 14:71 mean?
Peter's denial here is raw and desperate. After Jesus was arrested, Peter had followed at a distance, but when a servant girl recognized him as one of Jesus' followers, fear overwhelmed him, and he didn't just deny knowing Jesus, he did it with curses and oaths, trying to convince everyone (and perhaps himself) that he was telling the truth. This moment, which happens just hours after Peter promised he'd die with Jesus, shows how quickly our courage can crumble when we're afraid and alone. Yet the gospel records this failure not to shame Peter, but to show us that even our deepest stumbles don't have the final word, since Jesus would restore him after the resurrection.
