Mark 14:21
“For the Son of Man goes, even as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had not been born.””
What does Mark 14:21 mean?
Jesus is acknowledging that his death must happen according to God's plan, as the Old Testament prophets foretold. Yet he's also saying that while his betrayal serves a necessary purpose, the person who betrays him bears real moral responsibility for their choice to do so. The warning isn't about fate or predestination erasing human accountability, but about the weight of consciously choosing to harm an innocent person, especially one who has shown you love and friendship. Jesus is expressing the seriousness of such a betrayal, not wishing harm on Judas, but making clear that deliberately turning against someone innocent for personal gain comes with profound spiritual consequences.
