Watch therefore, for you don’t know when the lord of the house is coming, whether at evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning;

What does Mark 13:35 mean?

Jesus is reminding his followers that his return could happen at any time, so they need to stay spiritually alert and ready. The specific times mentioned (evening, midnight, dawn, morning) represent the whole day and night, emphasizing complete unpredictability rather than actual time slots. The point isn't to anxiously scan the horizon, but to live faithfully right now, knowing that whenever he returns, he wants to find us engaged in the work he's called us to. This is comforting rather than frightening: it means we don't need to have everything figured out by some deadline, but we also shouldn't drift into spiritual laziness.
