““It is like a man, traveling to another country, having left his house, and given authority to his servants, and to each one his work, and also commanded the doorkeeper to keep watch.”
What does Mark 13:34 mean?
Jesus is describing what faithful waiting looks like through the image of servants left in charge while their master travels. Each servant has been given specific responsibilities and trusted to handle them well, and the doorkeeper especially needs to stay alert, watching for the master's return. The point isn't that we need to know when he's coming back, but that not knowing should make us *more* diligent, not less, in taking seriously the work and responsibilities right in front of us. When you don't know the deadline, you can't slack off on the last day, which keeps you faithful all along.
