Mark 13:12
““Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child. Children will rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death.”
What does Mark 13:12 mean?
Jesus is describing the kind of suffering his followers would face, especially during times of persecution. Family bonds, which should be among the strongest protections we have, would break under extreme pressure, and people would betray their own loved ones to save themselves or please authorities. This isn't meant to say families are bad or that betrayal is inevitable in normal circumstances. Rather, Jesus is preparing his disciples for the reality that following him might cost them dearly, even within their closest relationships. He's being honest about how hard things could get, so his followers wouldn't be blindsided by heartbreak. If you're experiencing family conflict or estrangement, this verse acknowledges that such pain is real and has happened throughout history. At the same time, Jesus's larger message throughout the gospels emphasizes reconciliation, forgiveness, and the deeper family we find in God's kingdom.
