Mark 13:11
“When they lead you away and deliver you up, don’t be anxious beforehand, or premeditate what you will say, but say whatever will be given you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.”
What does Mark 13:11 mean?
Jesus is speaking to his followers about a time when they might face interrogation or persecution for their faith. In that moment of real danger and pressure, he tells them not to spend anxious energy beforehand trying to script the perfect defense. Instead, he promises something remarkable: the Holy Spirit will give them the words they need right then. This isn't a permission to be careless or unprepared in normal circumstances. Rather, it's a comfort for those facing genuine crisis, when fear tempts us to either stay silent or stumble over words. Jesus is saying that faithfulness in that moment doesn't depend on your quick thinking or eloquence, but on trust in God's presence. The Spirit will provide what's needed, and somehow your testimony becomes less about performing well and more about simply speaking truth.
