What does Mark 12:39 mean?

Jesus is describing how the religious teachers of his day loved being noticed and honored, sitting in the most visible spots during worship and at dinner tables. They were more concerned with looking important than with actually serving God or helping people. It's a gentle warning about how easy it is for any of us to care more about what others think than about what really matters, and Jesus invites us to check our own hearts about where we're truly seeking approval.
