Jesus is warning his followers against the scribes' desire for status and recognition. These religious experts wore distinctive long robes that set them apart and positioned them as important figures, and they loved being greeted respectfully in public spaces. His point isn't about clothing itself, but about the hunger for honor and the performance of piety that can hollow out genuine faith. When we're more concerned with how others see us than with loving God and serving people faithfully, we've lost something essential. This warning still speaks today whenever we're tempted to do good deeds for approval rather than from authentic conviction.
