“They answered Jesus, “We don’t know.” Jesus said to them, “Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.””
What does Mark 11:33 mean?
The religious leaders had just challenged Jesus about where his authority came from, hoping to trap him into a damaging answer. Instead of defending himself, Jesus turned the question back on them: if they wouldn't honestly say whether John the Baptist's authority came from God or humans, they weren't genuinely seeking truth. So Jesus refused to engage with their bad-faith argument. There's something liberating in this moment. Jesus didn't feel obligated to prove himself to people who weren't really listening. Sometimes when we're questioned by those who've already made up their minds, the wisest response isn't more explanation or justification, but simply to step back. Jesus knew his authority didn't depend on their approval, and neither does ours.
