Mark 10:8
“and the two will become one flesh, so that they are no longer two, but one flesh.”
What does Mark 10:8 mean?
Jesus is describing what happens in marriage, drawing from the creation story where God forms woman from man's side. When two people commit to each other in this deep way, they're not just joining forces or sharing space, they become genuinely unified, emotionally and physically intertwined in a way that changes who they are as individuals. This doesn't mean losing yourself or becoming dependent, but rather that your lives, hopes, and hearts become so woven together that you can't easily separate them anymore. It's meant to capture why marriage matters so much and why breaking that bond causes such real pain, even if you try to walk away cleanly. The unity Jesus describes here is the beautiful counterweight to the commitment and vulnerability the relationship requires.
