What does Mark 10:7 mean?

Jesus is describing what happens when two people commit to marriage, drawing from the creation story. When a man and woman marry, they're meant to form a new primary bond, one significant enough that it takes priority over their family of origin, even the deep bonds with parents. This doesn't mean abandoning or dishonoring parents, but rather recognizing that marriage creates a new center of life together. The "leaving and cleaving" idea acknowledges that building a shared life with a spouse requires emotional and practical investment that reshapes where our primary loyalty and energy go. For many people navigating family relationships or building their own families, this simple statement validates that marriage is meant to be a fundamental commitment.
