What does Mark 10:5 mean?

Jesus is responding to a question about divorce by pointing to something deeper than just the rules themselves. He's saying that God gave the law about divorce not because it was ideal, but because human hearts were too resistant and stubborn to live according to a better way. Think of it like a speed limit in a school zone—it exists because people won't drive carefully on their own, not because the speed limit is the ultimate good. This matters because it reminds us that laws and commandments sometimes meet us where we are rather than where we should be. Jesus is gently suggesting that if we truly understood God's original vision for marriage and commitment, we wouldn't need such strict rules in the first place. It's an invitation to look beyond just following regulations and ask what transformation of heart God is actually inviting us into.
