What does Mark 10:40 mean?
Jesus is responding to a request from James and John, who wanted the most honored positions in his kingdom. He's telling them that those seats of ultimate authority and closeness to God aren't his to hand out like rewards, no matter how much his followers ask. Instead, those places belong to whoever God the Father has already set apart for them. There's something both humbling and hopeful here. It reminds us that Jesus himself operates within God's larger plan, not outside of it.
