Mark 10:21
“Jesus looking at him loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack. Go, sell whatever you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me, taking up the cross.””
What does Mark 10:21 mean?
When Jesus looks at this rich young man, Mark tells us explicitly that Jesus loved him. That matters: Jesus isn't rejecting him coldly or condemning him. But love sometimes means naming the thing that's holding us back, and for this man, his wealth has become a barrier between him and real freedom. Jesus invites him to discover what it feels like to untie himself from the thing he's gripping most tightly, to experience generosity instead of accumulation, and to find that a life following Jesus is worth more than security money can buy. The "treasure in heaven" isn't a transaction (give away money, get rewards). It's more like saying: when you stop measuring your worth by what you own, you'll discover a kind of richness that can't be lost to theft or market crashes. Jesus then adds that following him means taking up a cross, which in that moment would have sounded like sacrifice and loss, but throughout the Gospel means finding your truest self rather than clinging to a false one. His invitation still stands for us: what are we holding so tightly that we can't move freely toward the life God is calling us into?
