What does Mark 10:12 mean?
This teaching addresses a situation that was countercultural for its time. In first-century Jewish and Roman culture, women typically had limited legal power to initiate divorce, so Jesus is expanding his earlier point about divorce to include women who do have that power. He's saying that the principle remains the same regardless of who initiates the separation: when someone leaves a marriage and remarries, they're breaking the covenant they made. Like the teaching about men divorcing, this reflects Jesus's concern for the dignity and permanence of marriage rather than a judgment on anyone's worth or past. Many people reading this today are carrying real pain from broken relationships, and this verse isn't meant to add shame to that burden. Instead, it invites us to see marriage as something sacred that deserves our commitment and faithfulness.
