Malachi 2:14

Yet you say, ‘Why?’ Because Yahweh has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously, though she is your companion, and the wife of your covenant.

What does Malachi 2:14 mean?

God is calling out people who are divorcing their wives and acting confused about why he's upset with them. The "wife of your youth" refers to the woman they married when they were young, and treating her treacherously means breaking the commitment they made to her. What makes this especially serious is that marriage isn't just a personal arrangement—God himself witnessed their vows, and the wife is described as both a companion and a covenantal partner, meaning the bond goes deeper than just preference or convenience. This speaks to how God takes our closest relationships seriously. When we discard someone we promised to honor, God notices not because he's harsh, but because that person matters to him, and so does the integrity of our word.
