What does Luke 9:61 mean?
This person wants to commit to following Jesus, but he's asking for permission to delay and say farewell to his family first. Jesus is about to respond (in the next verse) with a challenging statement about not looking back, which reveals how seriously he takes discipleship—it requires a readiness to let go of other loyalties, even good ones like family ties. The man's request sounds reasonable on the surface, but Jesus sees it as hesitation rooted in divided allegiance. For those of us today, this doesn't necessarily mean abandoning our families, but rather examining whether anything (comfort, relationships, reputation, plans) holds more sway over our hearts than following Jesus. Sometimes what feels like one more delay is really a symptom of not being fully ready to surrender.
