What does Luke 9:45 mean?
Jesus has just told his disciples that he will be betrayed and killed, but they can't seem to grasp what he's saying. Luke tells us something striking: not only did they fail to understand, but their understanding was somehow hidden from them, almost as if God was veiling the truth from their minds at that moment. The disciples' fear kept them silent too. Rather than pressing Jesus for clarity, they stayed quiet, perhaps sensing the weight of something they weren't ready to face. This captures something very human: sometimes we avoid asking hard questions because we instinctively know the answers will hurt or challenge us deeply. The disciples loved Jesus, but they weren't ready to accept that he would suffer and die. Their confusion and silence were, in a strange way, a kind of self-protection during a moment they couldn't yet bear to understand.
