What does Luke 8:34 mean?
When the demon-possessed man was healed, the herdsmen who watched over the pigs witnessed something they couldn't explain: the entire herd rushed down a cliff and drowned in the lake. Rather than staying to understand this miracle or help the man, they ran away in fear and spread word through town and countryside about what they'd seen. Their reaction shows how people often respond to encounters with divine power: sometimes with confusion, sometimes with self-protection instead of openness. These herdsmen had lost their livelihood in an instant, and their first instinct was to flee rather than draw closer to Jesus. It's a reminder that witnessing God's work doesn't automatically transform us, especially if we're more attached to what we've lost than to what we might gain.
