What does Luke 8:32 mean?
Jesus had just cast out a demon from a man who'd been tormented for a long time. The demon (or demons, depending on the account) begged Jesus not to send them into the abyss but instead to let them enter a nearby herd of pigs. Jesus granted this request, and the entire herd rushed down a steep bank and drowned in the lake below. This strange story shows Jesus's authority over evil forces, even when he seems to grant their wishes. The pigs' destruction wasn't random cruelty but a vivid sign that the demonic powers were being cast out and defeated. For the man freed from possession, watching those pigs plunge into the water was probably powerful proof that his tormentor was truly gone. Sometimes we see God's power not in what we'd expect, but in the unexpected ways he breaks the chains that bind us.
