What does Luke 8:28 mean?
A man possessed by demons recognizes Jesus immediately—even before Jesus says anything to him. His cry mixes fear and desperation: he knows Jesus has power over him, and he's terrified of what that means. The phrase "what do I have to do with you" is an ancient way of saying "leave me alone" or "don't interfere with me," yet it's spoken to someone he clearly recognizes as far greater than himself. What strikes many readers is the paradox here: the demon-possessed man both begs Jesus not to torment him and simultaneously acknowledges Jesus as God's Son. It's a picture of spiritual conflict, where darkness recognizes its true master but dreads the judgment that might follow. For those of us carrying burdens that feel overwhelming or out of control, this scene reminds us that Jesus sees our condition and has authority over what enslaves us, even when we're too broken or afraid to ask for help directly.
