What does Luke 7:47 mean?
Jesus is speaking after a woman of questionable reputation has washed his feet with her tears and perfume, while a judgmental Pharisee watched in disapproval. Jesus isn't saying her love earns forgiveness, but rather that her extravagant love flows from knowing she's been forgiven. She understands the weight of what's been released from her, so her gratitude overflows. The second part flips the logic: if someone thinks they've been forgiven very little, they'll show very little love in return. It's about perception and response. Someone who recognizes their deep need and experiences grace becomes transformed by it. Someone who believes they're basically fine has little reason to be moved. This speaks to us about how recognizing our own brokenness and God's mercy toward us opens our hearts to genuine, overflowing love for others and for God.
