What does Luke 7:46 mean?
Jesus is gently pointing out a contrast between the courtesies his host failed to show and the extravagant love this woman demonstrated. In that culture, anointing a guest's head with oil was a basic act of hospitality and respect, like offering water to wash dusty feet. By skipping this common courtesy, the host (a Pharisee) had subtly communicated coldness or disdain. Meanwhile, this woman, who was known in the town as a sinner, showed Jesus profound honor by anointing his feet with expensive perfume and washing them with her tears. Jesus uses this moment not to shame his host, but to show that genuine love and gratitude matter far more than following social rules. Her actions revealed a transformed heart, while the host's withholding revealed something about the condition of his own.
