What does Luke 7:2 mean?

A Roman military officer has a servant he deeply cares about, someone valuable enough to him that he's desperate to save his life. The servant is gravely ill, and without help, will die soon. This opening detail matters because it shows us what kind of person this centurion is, before we even hear what he does about the crisis. He's not just a distant authority figure barking orders, but someone with a human heart who is willing to go to extraordinary lengths for someone he loves.
