What does Luke 6:44 mean?
Jesus uses the simple image of plants to talk about something much deeper: who we really are shows up in what we do and produce over time. You can't get figs from a thornbush or grapes from brambles, no matter how much you want to, because plants bear fruit according to their nature. He's speaking to people wondering how to tell who's genuine and who isn't, especially when it comes to spiritual teachers. The point isn't that we need to be perfect, but that our actual character, values, and choices reveal what's truly inside us. It's reassuring in a way, because it means we don't have to read minds or judge hearts we can't see. We can look at patterns of behavior and see what kind of fruit someone's life actually produces.
