Luke 6:15
“Matthew; Thomas; James, the son of Alphaeus; Simon, who was called the Zealot;”
What does Luke 6:15 mean?
This verse is simply listing four of Jesus's twelve apostles, introducing us to some of his closest followers. Matthew (also called Levi) was a tax collector before Jesus called him, which made him an outcast in Jewish society. Thomas earned the nickname "the doubter" from later Gospel accounts, though his real legacy is one of loyal devotion. James the son of Alphaeus remains one of the more mysterious disciples, mentioned in the lists but rarely appearing in the Gospel stories themselves. Simon the Zealot likely had connections to a political resistance movement against Roman occupation, showing that Jesus gathered followers from across the social and political spectrum. What's worth noticing is that Jesus brought together people from wildly different backgrounds and perspectives, uniting them around something greater than their former identities.
