What does Luke 6:14 mean?
Jesus is introducing his twelve closest followers, and he's starting with Simon, who gets a new name: Peter, meaning "rock" or "stone." This name hints at Peter's future role as a foundational leader in the church, even though he'll stumble and doubt along the way. Andrew and his brother Simon are fishermen who'll leave everything to follow Jesus, and James and John, also brothers, are nicknamed "sons of thunder" in other gospels because of their passionate personalities. Philip and Bartholomew complete this opening list of ordinary people from ordinary trades, chosen not because they're impressive by the world's standards but because Jesus saw something in them worth developing. It's worth noticing that Jesus names these people deliberately and publicly, making them real individuals with particular stories rather than nameless followers.
