“But new wine must be put into fresh wine skins, and both are preserved.”
What does Luke 5:38 mean?
Jesus is teaching that you can't patch an old way of doing things with something entirely new. Just as old leather wineskins become brittle and will burst under the pressure of fermenting wine, rigid systems can't contain radical change. When something genuinely transformative comes along, it needs space to grow and reshape itself, and the old structures need to be released to preserve both. This speaks to spiritual renewal: following Jesus isn't about fitting faith into your old patterns of thinking or living, but about allowing yourself to be remade entirely so that both you and your faith can flourish together.
