“No one puts new wine into old wine skins, or else the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed.”
What does Luke 5:37 mean?
Jesus is talking about the limits of what old containers can hold. Wineskins were made from animal hides, and as they aged, they became brittle and lost their flexibility. Fresh, fermenting wine produces gas and expands, so it needs a supple container that can stretch with the pressure. An old, hardened wineskin simply can't accommodate that growth and will tear apart, ruining both the wine and the skin. He's using this practical reality to explain why his new way of living can't simply be patched onto old religious habits and traditions. The point isn't that old things are bad, but that rigid systems can't absorb what's genuinely new and alive. When we try to force fresh spiritual movement into unchanged patterns, something breaks. Real transformation sometimes means being willing to let go of how we've always done things, not out of rebellion, but because growth itself demands room to expand.
