Luke 5:27
“After these things he went out, and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax office, and said to him, “Follow me!””
What does Luke 5:27 mean?
Jesus spots Levi at his tax booth and calls him to be a disciple with those simple words: "Follow me." What makes this moment striking is that tax collectors were deeply despised in Jewish society, seen as traitors who collaborated with Roman occupation and cheated their own people for profit. By calling Levi, Jesus deliberately crosses a social boundary that respectable people wouldn't dream of crossing. The invitation isn't earned or deserved, and Levi's response is equally remarkable, as we'll see he immediately leaves everything to go with Jesus. This sets up one of the Gospel's most important themes: Jesus comes for people everyone else has written off.
