What does Luke 4:11 mean?
When Jesus is being tempted in the wilderness, Satan quotes this verse to suggest that God will protect him no matter what reckless thing he does. The full context is Psalm 91, a psalm about God's protection for those who trust him. Satan is twisting it to argue that Jesus can throw himself off the temple and God must catch him, because the psalm promises divine care. Jesus refuses this trap by pointing out that trusting God doesn't mean testing God or asking him to bail us out of dangers we deliberately create. The verse itself isn't wrong, it's just being weaponized here. It reminds us that God's promises of protection are meant to give us peace in genuine hardship, not permission to be foolish.
