What does Luke 24:49 mean?

Jesus is telling his followers that something extraordinary is coming, but they need to be patient and stay put. He's referring to the Holy Spirit, which his Father promised long before, and this gift will give them strength and courage to do what they couldn't do on their own. He's asking them to wait in Jerusalem rather than scatter, because that's where God will meet them and transform them for the work ahead. There's something tender in this instruction. Jesus knows they're confused, grieving, and uncertain about what comes next, so he's giving them both a promise and a clear next step. The "power from on high" isn't about having control over others, but about being filled with God's presence in a way that will steady them and enable their witness to the world.
