What does Luke 23:37 mean?
The soldiers guarding Jesus at the cross were mocking him, essentially saying: if you really are who you claim to be, prove it by saving yourself from this execution. It's a taunt rooted in disbelief, the kind of cruel challenge people sometimes throw at those who are suffering or in a vulnerable position. What makes this moment particularly poignant is that Jesus could have called down power to escape (he himself said this was possible), yet he chose instead to stay, to endure the cross, and to go through with his mission of redemption. The soldiers couldn't see that his refusal to save himself was actually the greatest act of power and love imaginable.
