What does Luke 23:32 mean?

On the way to his crucifixion, Jesus walked alongside two criminals who were being executed as well. Luke mentions them simply and matter-of-factly here, but their presence becomes deeply significant in the hours that follow. These weren't random details—one of them would speak to Jesus from his own cross, and Jesus would respond with a promise of mercy that cuts straight to the heart of what his death meant. This detail reminds us that Jesus didn't die in isolation or in a sanitized way. He was grouped with condemned people, treated as a criminal himself, sharing the condemned's path. Even in the account of his darkest moment, Luke quietly shows us that Jesus was present to people on the margins, people facing their own death, people with nothing left to lose.
