“For if they do these things in the green tree, what will be done in the dry?””
What does Luke 23:31 mean?
Jesus speaks these words as he's being led to his crucifixion, and they're a sobering warning about what happens when people reject God's goodness. The "green tree" represents him—living, vital, full of life-giving potential—and yet even in his innocence and healing power, he faces suffering and death at human hands. If this is what happens to the righteous, the "dry tree" (representing those who are spiritually withered and far from God), suggests the consequences will be far worse. It's a way of saying: if God's own son, who brought only love and truth, was treated with such cruelty, then those who turn away from God and persist in wrong have reason to fear what judgment awaits. The verse carries both a warning and an implicit plea to reconsider, to choose the living way while there's still time.
