What does Luke 23:17 mean?
During Passover, there was a Roman custom (or possibly a Jewish one, since details vary among accounts) that allowed the governor to release a prisoner as a gesture of goodwill to the crowd. This verse is setting up the moment when Pilate will offer the people a choice: Jesus or Barabbas, a man imprisoned for insurrection and murder.
