Luke 22:27
“For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Isn’t it he who sits at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.”
What does Luke 22:27 mean?
Jesus is turning upside down what everyone assumed about greatness and power. In his time, a servant at a table was the lowest position, while the person being served held all the honor and authority. Yet here Jesus, their rabbi and the one they recognized as their leader, says he operates as a servant among them instead. He's showing that true greatness isn't measured by how much you're served or how much power you hold over others, but by how willing you are to meet people's needs and put their welfare before your own comfort. This wasn't just nice teaching for Jesus, either, because he lived it out right up to his death, and he's inviting his followers to think about leadership and relationships the same way.
