“You will be handed over even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends. They will cause some of you to be put to death.”
What does Luke 21:16 mean?
Jesus is preparing his followers for real persecution, and he's being honest about how painful it will be. The hardest betrayals often come not from enemies, but from the people closest to us, people we trusted to stand by us. In some historical contexts (both in the first century and since), followers of Jesus have faced exactly this, losing family relationships because of their faith. This isn't meant to scare people away from believing, but rather to help them count the cost beforehand. Jesus wanted his disciples to know that faithfulness might cost them dearly, and to decide whether they could trust him enough to bear that loss. For anyone reading this while actually facing family rejection or danger because of their faith, these words acknowledge that their suffering is real and that Jesus knew it would happen, even before he asked them to follow.
