Luke 20:7
“They answered that they didn’t know where it was from.”
What does Luke 20:7 mean?
The religious leaders had just been cornered by Jesus with a clever question: if John's baptism came from heaven or from people, how should they answer? They realized that either response would trap them, so they refused to take a position at all. Their answer, "we don't know," was actually a dodge, an admission that they wouldn't speak honestly even when they clearly understood the stakes. Sometimes our silence or uncertainty isn't really about confusion, it's about fear of the consequences that come with telling the truth.
