“But those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage.”
What does Luke 20:35 mean?
Jesus is describing what eternal life will actually be like, and it might surprise us. In the resurrection, relationships won't be organized around marriage the way they are now, because the deepest human needs that marriage addresses in this life (companionship, security, physical intimacy, partnership) will be completely fulfilled in God's direct presence. This isn't Jesus saying marriage is bad or that married love doesn't matter now, but rather that the future reality is so much richer and more complete that the particular structures we need in this temporary life won't apply anymore. Being "worthy" here simply means being part of God's restored creation, and it's open to anyone willing to accept it.
